Most people in the Hunter drive to work. Newcastle, the port, the hospitals and the university draw workers from Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens, while mines and power stations around Singleton and Muswellbrook draw shift workers from across the region. Shift changes put a lot of traffic on the New England Highway and the Hunter Expressway.
Trucks and heavy vehicles. Coal, mining and port freight moves on the New England Highway, the Hunter Expressway and roads around the Port of Newcastle, and oversize mining loads are a regular sight in the Upper Hunter.
