CTP Claims

NSW CTP Claims, Explained in Plain English

Hurt in a motor accident in NSW? Your CTP claim can cover weekly payments, treatment and care and, for some people, a lump-sum damages claim. These guides explain how it works, what you can claim, the deadlines, and what to do when the insurer says no.

Every NSW vehicle registration includes CTP insurance, the green slip. If you were injured as a driver, passenger, rider, cyclist or pedestrian, it is usually where your compensation comes from. For accidents on or after 1 December 2017, claims fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, with changes for accidents from 1 April 2023.

Most people claim statutory benefits first: weekly payments if you can't work, and reasonable and necessary treatment and care. Some people can also make a common law damages claim later. Whether you can depends on fault, on whether your injury is a threshold injury, and on the evidence.

If you are just starting, read what a CTP claim is and how to make one. If your claim is already running and something has gone wrong, go straight to claim denied.

This is general information about the NSW CTP scheme, not legal advice. CTP Lawyer is not a law firm. We point people to the help their claim needs: independent CTP lawyers when the case calls for it, and doctors and allied health for treatment. For the official rules, see SIRA, or call CTP Assist on 1300 656 919.
