Getting help from Thornton
Thornton is a growing residential suburb between Beresfield and East Maitland, with Thornton station on the Hunter Line. Raymond Terrace Road carries traffic north toward Raymond Terrace, and the New England Highway is close by. Maitland Hospital at Metford is a few minutes south.
If you were hurt as a bus passenger, or hit while walking to Thornton station, the first steps are the same as for drivers: get checked, then record where and when it happened.
If it would be easier to talk in a language other than English, CTP Assist can set up an interpreter for your claim, wherever you live in or near Thornton. Its number is 1300 656 919.
Newcastle & the Hunter: the wider area
John Hunter Hospital at New Lambton Heights is the region's major trauma hospital, supported by Maitland Hospital at Metford, Belmont Hospital on Lake Macquarie, and district hospitals at Cessnock, Singleton and Muswellbrook. Newcastle has its own light rail, a ferry to Stockton and an airport at Williamtown, but most trips across the Hunter are by car.

After the crash: seven practical steps
- Make the scene safe if you can. Switch on your warning lights, move out of traffic if it's safe to do so, and call 000 if anyone is hurt or trapped.
- A police report gives your claim an independent record of when and where the crash happened. Ask for the event number and file it with your other claim papers.
- See a GP or go to hospital as soon as you can, and say the injuries came from a motor accident so it's written down as the cause.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, phone number, address, licence number and registration. Photograph the vehicles, the scene and any visible injuries.
- Work out which CTP insurer to claim with. It's usually the insurer of the vehicle at fault, and CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help you identify it.
- Keep copies of every form you send and every letter you receive. Note the dates, because review deadlines, often 28 days, run from when you get a decision.
- Ask for a free claim check, and we'll look at where your claim is up to and point you to doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer, or both.
Key CTP deadlines
To have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident, the insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start from the date you claim. A common law damages claim must generally be made within 3 years, and within 2 years if you want weekly payments to continue beyond 2 years. Treat this as general information, not legal advice. More on CTP claim time limits.
Doctors and allied health
A doctor experienced with CTP claims can diagnose your injuries, complete the Certificate of Fitness and set a treatment plan. We can point you to one, and to allied health such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology. The insurer generally pays for treatment that is reasonable and necessary, within the benefit periods that apply to you.

Frequently asked questions
Usually not. Most injured people can claim statutory benefits whoever was at fault. The main exception is being wholly or mostly at fault, which means contributory negligence above 61%. Then weekly payments and treatment are generally limited to the first 52 weeks, and damages aren't available. Children who were 16 or under at the time can receive treatment and care for as long as they need it, regardless of fault.
Yes. CTP Assist, run by SIRA, can arrange an interpreter for your claim on 1300 656 919. It can also connect you with the free CTP Legal Advisory Service for statutory benefits questions. If you'd like a family member to help you through the claim check, that can often be arranged as well, with your consent.
Three main kinds. Doctors experienced with CTP claims, for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness. Allied health, such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology, for treatment and recovery. And an independent lawyer experienced in CTP claims when the case calls for one, for example a refused claim, a threshold dispute or a damages claim. Many people only need the first two.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
No, and you don't need one. The claim check happens by phone and online, so people in Thornton get the same help as anyone else in NSW without travelling. If an independent CTP lawyer would help with your claim, the lawyer you speak with can generally work with you by phone, email and video as well.
No. The claim check is free and there's no obligation to take any next step. CTP Lawyer is a free NSW service, not a law firm. We look at where your claim is up to and explain the options in plain English. If you're connected with an independent CTP lawyer, any legal costs are between you and them, and should be set out in writing first.
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
No. Nothing in a NSW CTP claim requires a trip to Sydney. Our claim check is by phone and online, claims can be lodged through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer, and GPs across the Hunter can generally provide the Certificate of Fitness. If a lawyer would help, many motor accident lawyers work with regional clients by phone and video, and some are based in Newcastle if you'd prefer to meet.
