Around Tamarama: roads, hospitals and getting around
Tamarama is a compact Eastern Suburbs beach pocket between Bronte and Bondi, where narrow clifftop streets and limited parking concentrate slow but vehicle conflicts. If a CTP insurer's decision doesn't seem right to you (a denied claim, stopped payments or a 'threshold injury' label), you can generally ask for an internal review, and people in Tamarama can talk it through with us by phone first.
Getting around after a crash can be harder than usual. If you'll be relying on bus stops for Bondi Junction to reach work or treatment for a while, keep a note of the extra time and cost from the start.
If you went to Prince of Wales Hospital after the crash, that visit is part of your claim history. Note the date and keep the documents together with the police event number.
Eastern Suburbs: the wider area
This is one of Sydney's most densely settled areas, with apartments and terraces packed between the harbour and the beaches. There is no rail beyond Bondi Junction, so buses and the light rail to Randwick and Kingsford carry much of the load, and roads such as Anzac Parade, Old South Head Road and New South Head Road stay busy well outside peak hours.

Claim help for people in Tamarama, by topic
Most people start with the first group, because it deals with the claim: lodging it, fault, what it pays and what to do after a refusal. The other two groups suit people who are already weighing up legal help.
Car accident & CTP
Questions about the claim itself: lodging with the right insurer, who was at fault, what the scheme pays, a refusal, and crashes on a bike or on foot.

Your first steps after a crash
- Your safety comes first. Get clear of moving traffic if you can do so safely, and call 000 for police and an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
- Report the crash to police and write down the event number. The insurer will usually ask for it when you lodge a CTP claim.
- Get medical care, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, such as whiplash, can take a day or two to show, and early records help your claim.
- If the other vehicle drove off, note anything you can about it and tell police promptly. A claim against the Nominal Defendant may still be possible.
- Claim as soon as you can. Within 28 days, weekly payments can be back-paid. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start later.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- If anything is unclear or in dispute, ask for a free claim check by phone or online. There's no obligation, and many people find they can manage the claim themselves.
Key CTP deadlines
The clock starts on the day of the crash. Lodge within 28 days if you can, so weekly payments can be back-paid. A claim made up to 3 months later is still possible, though payments may only begin on the date you claim. Damages claims generally have a 3-year limit; lodge by the 2-year mark if you want weekly payments to be able to run past it. As always, it's general information, not legal advice, so check your own dates. More on CTP claim time limits.
Treatment and the medical side of your claim
Your recovery comes first, and it also drives the claim. A doctor who understands CTP can record your injuries properly on the Certificate of Fitness. Physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology may follow. Treatment that is reasonable and necessary is generally funded by the insurer within the benefit periods, though it decides each request.

Frequently asked questions
The sooner the better. The insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days for weekly payments to be back-paid to the day after the accident. Claims made later, up to 3 months after the accident, are still possible, but payments may then start from the claim date. Common law damages claims generally have to be made within 3 years. Your own dates may differ, so check them early.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
No. The claim check is free and there's no obligation to take any next step. CTP Lawyer is a free NSW service, not a law firm. We look at where your claim is up to and explain the options in plain English. If you're connected with an independent CTP lawyer, any legal costs are between you and them, and should be set out in writing first.
You tell us what happened, when, and where your claim is up to: whether you've lodged, what the insurer has said and how your treatment is going. We check the time limits that apply and whether anything is in dispute. Then we explain your options and point you to the help that fits, whether that's doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer or simply the next form.
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
Usually not. Most injured people can claim statutory benefits whoever was at fault. The main exception is being wholly or mostly at fault, which means contributory negligence above 61%. Then weekly payments and treatment are generally limited to the first 52 weeks, and damages aren't available. Children who were 16 or under at the time can receive treatment and care for as long as they need it, regardless of fault.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
Usually, yes. The NSW CTP scheme generally applies to a crash that happens on a NSW road, whether the injured person lives in Maroubra, Melbourne or London. Keep the other driver's details and any police event number, see a doctor while you are still here, and lodge the claim as early as you can, ideally within 28 days. After you leave, the claim can usually continue by email, phone and online.
