Before you choose any lawyer, it helps to know what you'd be choosing them for. A compensation lawyer can explain your entitlements, gather evidence, deal with the insurer and advise on offers, but many motor accident claims never reach that point. If you were injured on the road and live in Strathfield, our claim check looks at your situation and tells you plainly whether legal help is worth it now, later or not at all. It's free.

Where does your claim belong?
Compensation in NSW depends on how and where you were hurt. Different schemes have different insurers, rules and deadlines. Pick the card closest to your situation. If none quite fits, the claim check can sort it out with you.
- Hurt in a motor accident
A road injury generally runs through CTP
If you were hurt as a driver, passenger, rider, cyclist or pedestrian in a NSW crash, your claim generally goes through CTP. That's the scheme this site helps with. Most people can claim statutory benefits whoever was at fault.
CTP lawyer in Strathfield - Hurt at work
Usually a separate scheme with its own rules
An injury at work is usually a workers compensation claim, which is a different scheme from CTP, with its own insurers and rules. Tell us what happened and we can point you to the right help.
Tell us what happened - Crash while working
Driving for work? Both schemes may be involved
A crash on the job is usually a work injury and a motor accident at the same time. Workers compensation generally comes first. You may still have a CTP claim for damages if another driver was at fault, so it's worth getting advice.
Crash while working? Quick check - Something else
Other injuries are usually outside what we help with
A fall in a public place, a TPD claim through your super, or a complaint about medical treatment each follow different rules. They're usually outside what we help with. If you're not sure, the claim check will say so.

Road injuries near Strathfield: where claims start
Parramatta Road, the City West Link and WestConnex bring heavy traffic through the Inner West, alongside busy cycling on the Bay Run. Riders and walkers hurt by a vehicle generally claim through CTP too. People in the Strathfield Municipal Council area deal with the same NSW compensation rules as everyone else. What shapes your claim is how you were hurt, who was at fault and how serious the injury is, not the postcode. Around Strathfield, many households speak Korean and Mandarin. If you'd rather talk about a motor accident claim in your own language, call CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 and ask for an interpreter, and tell any lawyer you speak with early.

Compensation after a motor accident, in brief
Compensation after a NSW motor accident generally runs through CTP, the compulsory green slip scheme. It has two parts. Most people can claim statutory benefits, meaning weekly payments and treatment and care, regardless of who was at fault. Some can also claim common law damages, a lump sum, if another driver was at fault, they weren't mostly at fault and the injury is more than a threshold injury.
Your accident date matters more than most people expect. For accidents on or after 1 December 2017, the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017 sets the rules, and further changes apply to accidents from 1 April 2023. If the crash was before that first date, the older Motor Accidents Compensation Act 1999 applies. That's one reason a general answer only goes so far, and why a claim check starts with the date.
Rules change
The NSW rules have changed several times since 2017. What applies to you depends on your accident date, so check the current rules, or ask, before you rely on any general guide.

Why the same lawyer has several titles
'Compensation lawyer' is the broadest of the labels, and 'personal injury lawyer' is close behind. 'CTP lawyer' and 'motor accident lawyer' narrow the field to road injuries under the green slip scheme. In practice, one lawyer may use all four. The useful question isn't which title they use but how much of their work is NSW motor accident claims, because the scheme has its own forms, steps and deadlines.
Who we are
We don't run claims or act for anyone, and we aren't a law firm. We help you work out what kind of claim you have and what help it needs, then connect you with an independent lawyer when the claim calls for one.
Lawyer now, later or not at all?
Searching for a compensation lawyer doesn't mean you need one today. Here's when talking to one often makes sense, and when you may manage without. If you're somewhere in between, a free claim check can help you decide.
Often worth talking to a lawyer
- An insurer letter uses terms you don't follow and asks you to decide something
- The injury looks serious or permanent
- You're not sure what kind of claim you have, and time may be running
- The crash was some time ago and you're unsure what's still possible
You may not need one
- Weekly payments and treatment are being paid without argument
- The only loss is damage to your car
- Your questions are general ones that CTP Assist can answer free
If your recovery has stalled, the next step may be medical rather than legal. We can suggest doctors and allied health who understand CTP claims, the Certificate of Fitness and the reports insurers expect to see.
Not quite your situation?
- If you've already decided to engage someone and want to know what happens at the first meeting and after, the compensation solicitor page walks through it. Compensation solicitor in Strathfield
- If your injury is serious or likely to be permanent, the injury compensation page explains what that means for a claim, including how impairment is assessed. Injury compensation lawyer in Strathfield
- If you want to know what records to keep while you recover, and how to choose a lawyer when the time comes, the personal injury lawyer page covers both. Personal injury lawyer in Strathfield
Different stages, different questions
People searching for a compensation lawyer are at very different points. Some were hurt recently and haven't lodged anything. Some have been receiving weekly payments for months. Some have a refusal letter in front of them, and some are weighing an offer. Each of those is a different question with a different answer, so start by placing yourself on the list below.
- Just after the crash: the CTP claims pages cover lodging and the early deadlines
- A decision against you: the claim denied page explains internal review and the Personal Injury Commission
- Not sure it's a CTP claim at all: the car accident claim page helps you work that out

The work behind the title
Most of a compensation lawyer's work is unglamorous. They read insurer letters closely, check them against the rules, request records from hospitals and treating practitioners, and put the evidence together in the order the scheme expects. When a decision goes against you, they can run the review or dispute. When an offer arrives, they weigh it against your losses. No lawyer can promise a particular result.
A lawyer also can't change the scheme's rules. If your injury is a threshold injury, or you were mostly at fault, some forms of compensation may simply not be open to you, and an honest lawyer will say so. That's useful in itself. Knowing early what isn't available saves time and lets you put your energy into the parts of the claim that are.
- Checking insurer decisions against the rules for your accident date
- Keeping track of the deadlines that apply to you
- Arranging medical reports when the claim needs them
The words you'll see in insurer letters
Much of the confusion in a motor accident claim comes from vocabulary. A single letter can mention statutory benefits, a threshold injury and an internal review, each with a precise meaning. The short definitions below are general and simplified. If a word appears in a decision about your claim, it's worth checking exactly what it means for you.
- Statutory benefits: weekly payments and treatment and care that most injured people can claim regardless of fault
- Case manager: the person at the insurer who handles your claim day to day
- Internal review: asking the insurer to look again at a decision you disagree with
- Nominal Defendant: the fund that stands in when the vehicle was unidentified or uninsured
- Personal Injury Commission: the independent tribunal that decides many disputes in the scheme
Injuries that aren't motor accident claims
Public liability and TPD claims come up often when people search for a compensation lawyer. Public liability usually covers injuries in a public place or on someone else's property, while TPD usually relates to insurance held through superannuation. Claims about medical treatment are separate again. None of them is usually something we help with. And if the only loss is to your car, CTP doesn't pay for it at all. For anything that began with a vehicle, start with the claim check.

Frequently asked questions
Complaints or claims about medical treatment follow their own path and are usually outside what we help with. The same generally goes for injuries that didn't involve a motor vehicle at all, such as a sports injury or a dog bite. It's still worth checking, though. Some injuries that don't sound like road accidents may count as a motor accident in CTP terms, and the claim check can sort that out.
Usually not. A TPD claim is generally made through the insurance attached to your superannuation, and a public liability claim usually follows an injury in a public place or on someone else's property, such as a fall. Both run under different rules from motor accident claims and are usually outside what we help with. If a vehicle was involved in your injury, or you're unsure, the claim check will tell you.
Mostly because people search using different words. A practice that works on NSW road injury claims may describe itself as compensation lawyers, personal injury lawyers, CTP lawyers or motor accident lawyers, sometimes all on the same website. The titles usually describe the work rather than a different qualification. When you're deciding who to speak with, ask how much of their work involves NSW motor accident claims; that tells you more than the label does.
Usually, yes. Most lawyers who handle compensation claims in NSW are solicitors, and 'lawyer' is simply the everyday word. A barrister is a different kind of lawyer who is generally brought in for court work or advice on particular issues. For a motor accident claim, the person you deal with will generally be a solicitor, whatever title their website uses. What matters more is their experience with NSW motor accident claims.
A lawyer can give you a view once they understand your injuries, your earnings and how your recovery is going, but an honest one won't put a figure on it at the start. What a claim may be worth depends on evidence that often takes months to become clear, such as whether the injury is more than a threshold injury. Be cautious about anyone who quotes a number before seeing your medical records.
Not directly. An injury at work is usually a workers compensation claim, which sits in a separate scheme from CTP with different insurers and rules, and it isn't what this site covers. If you describe what happened, we can still point you to the right help. Where the injury came from a crash while you were driving or riding for work, workers compensation generally comes first, though a damages claim against the at-fault driver's CTP insurer may still be open. Get advice before settling either claim.
