Getting help from Brooklyn
Brooklyn is a Hawkesbury River township on the northern edge of Sydney near Dangar Island, Mooney Mooney and Cheero Point, reached by a winding road off the highway corridor. For Brooklyn residents, a CTP claim generally starts with statutory benefits for weekly payments and treatment costs; some people may later be able to claim common law damages as well.
Crashes in car parks, for example at the Brooklyn marina, can still be CTP matters in many cases. Record the level or bay, and ask management about footage early.
Being 18 km from Gosford doesn't put you further from help. The claim check runs by phone and online, so you start the same way as people in the city.

North of Berowra the suburbs thin out into bushland and river settlements such as Brooklyn and Dangar Island, where the Hawkesbury River, the old highway route and the Central Coast & Newcastle Line shape how people get around.

What to do after a car accident in Brooklyn
- Check on everyone involved, yourself included. If anyone is injured, call 000 straight away and follow the operator's instructions until help arrives.
- Report the crash to police and write down the event number. The insurer will usually ask for it when you lodge a CTP claim.
- See a GP or go to hospital as soon as you can, and say the injuries came from a motor accident so it's written down as the cause.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, phone number, address, licence number and registration. Photograph the vehicles, the scene and any visible injuries.
- Claim as soon as you can. Within 28 days, weekly payments can be back-paid. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start later.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- If anything is unclear or in dispute, ask for a free claim check by phone or online. There's no obligation, and many people find they can manage the claim themselves.
Time limits to know
To have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident, the insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start from the date you claim. A common law damages claim must generally be made within 3 years, and within 2 years if you want weekly payments to continue beyond 2 years. Treat this as general information, not legal advice. More on CTP claim time limits.
Doctors and allied health
Treatment and your claim are closely linked. Your GP completes the Certificate of Fitness, which the insurer relies on, and your treating team's notes become the medical evidence. If you'd like help finding a doctor who knows CTP paperwork, or physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology, ask us. The insurer decides what it funds, and decisions can be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
Usually not. Most injured people can claim statutory benefits whoever was at fault. The main exception is being wholly or mostly at fault, which means contributory negligence above 61%. Then weekly payments and treatment are generally limited to the first 52 weeks, and damages aren't available. Children who were 16 or under at the time can receive treatment and care for as long as they need it, regardless of fault.
No. The claim check is free and there's no obligation to take any next step. CTP Lawyer is a free NSW service, not a law firm. We look at where your claim is up to and explain the options in plain English. If you're connected with an independent CTP lawyer, any legal costs are between you and them, and should be set out in writing first.
In many cases, yes. If you're in hospital or finding it hard to manage, a partner, parent or adult child can start the conversation for you. We may need your consent before discussing your details, and the insurer will have its own rules about who it can speak to. For a child's claim, a parent or guardian usually acts for them.
We're sorry for your loss. CTP insurance generally covers reasonable funeral expenses regardless of fault, including transporting the person to near their usual home. The deceased person's legal personal representative, usually a close family member, can apply. Dependants may also be able to claim. CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can connect you with a Principal Liaison Coordinator for support.
Often not. Many CTP claims for statutory benefits run without a lawyer. Legal help tends to matter when a claim is refused, the insurer says your injury is threshold and you disagree, payments stop, fault is disputed, an offer arrives or a damages claim may be open. SIRA's free CTP Legal Advisory Service can also help with some statutory benefits questions.
Yes. CTP Assist, run by SIRA, can arrange an interpreter for your claim on 1300 656 919. It can also connect you with the free CTP Legal Advisory Service for statutory benefits questions. If you'd like a family member to help you through the claim check, that can often be arranged as well, with your consent.
No. Our claim check is by phone and online, and if the check shows a lawyer would help, many motor accident lawyers are set up to work by phone and video. If you'd rather meet in person, say so when you're referred. Most early steps, like getting a Certificate of Fitness from a GP and lodging the claim through Service NSW, can be done close to home or online.
