Whether the crash in Wollongbar was a small bump or something serious, the early steps are much the same: get checked, report it, swap details and claim within 28 days if you can. What differs is the help you need next, and a free claim check sorts that out. For many people it's doctors and allied health. For some it's an independent CTP lawyer. You don't pay for the check either way.

Wollongbar at a glance, for people after a car accident
Wollongbar is a small town on the Alstonville Plateau, between Alstonville and Lismore on the Bruxner Highway. The highway carries steady traffic between Lismore and Ballina past the town's newer housing estates. Lismore Base Hospital and Ballina Hospital are each about 15 to 20 minutes away.
If it would be easier to talk in a language other than English, CTP Assist can set up an interpreter for your claim, wherever you live in or near Wollongbar. Its number is 1300 656 919.
If a crash has left you unable to drive, reaching treatment from Wollongbar may take more planning. Note any taxi or public transport costs from the start and ask the insurer about them.
Northern Rivers & Clarence: the wider area
Flooding periodically closes roads across the region and can cut off towns for days. Lismore Base Hospital is the main referral hospital, with Tweed Valley Hospital near Kingscliff, Grafton Base Hospital, and smaller hospitals at Ballina, Byron and Maclean. For Tweed residents, Gold Coast hospitals across the border are also close by.

What to do after a car accident in Wollongbar
- Check on everyone involved, yourself included. If anyone is injured, call 000 straight away and follow the operator's instructions until help arrives.
- A police report gives your claim an independent record of when and where the crash happened. Ask for the event number and file it with your other claim papers.
- Get medical care, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, such as whiplash, can take a day or two to show, and early records help your claim.
- Get names and numbers from witnesses before they leave. Photos of the vehicles, number plates and road layout are worth taking if you can do it safely.
- Lodge your claim through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer. Aim for 28 days so weekly payments can be back-paid to the day after the crash.
- Keep copies of every form you send and every letter you receive. Note the dates, because review deadlines, often 28 days, run from when you get a decision.
- Ask for a free claim check, and we'll look at where your claim is up to and point you to doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer, or both.
Time limits to know
To have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident, the insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start from the date you claim. A common law damages claim must generally be made within 3 years, and within 2 years if you want weekly payments to continue beyond 2 years. Treat this as general information, not legal advice. More on CTP claim time limits.
Doctors and allied health
Treatment and your claim are closely linked. Your GP completes the Certificate of Fitness, which the insurer relies on, and your treating team's notes become the medical evidence. If you'd like help finding a doctor who knows CTP paperwork, or physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology, ask us. The insurer decides what it funds, and decisions can be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions
The sooner the better. The insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days for weekly payments to be back-paid to the day after the accident. Claims made later, up to 3 months after the accident, are still possible, but payments may then start from the claim date. Common law damages claims generally have to be made within 3 years. Your own dates may differ, so check them early.
Often not. Many CTP claims for statutory benefits run without a lawyer. Legal help tends to matter when a claim is refused, the insurer says your injury is threshold and you disagree, payments stop, fault is disputed, an offer arrives or a damages claim may be open. SIRA's free CTP Legal Advisory Service can also help with some statutory benefits questions.
No, and you don't need one. The claim check happens by phone and online, so people in Wollongbar get the same help as anyone else in NSW without travelling. If an independent CTP lawyer would help with your claim, the lawyer you speak with can generally work with you by phone, email and video as well.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
You tell us what happened, when, and where your claim is up to: whether you've lodged, what the insurer has said and how your treatment is going. We check the time limits that apply and whether anything is in dispute. Then we explain your options and point you to the help that fits, whether that's doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer or simply the next form.
Three main kinds. Doctors experienced with CTP claims, for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness. Allied health, such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology, for treatment and recovery. And an independent lawyer experienced in CTP claims when the case calls for one, for example a refused claim, a threshold dispute or a damages claim. Many people only need the first two.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
Get medical care first and keep every report. Note the driver's name and registration, find witnesses if you can, and ask the police for an event number. A crash involving a motor vehicle on a NSW road is generally covered by the NSW CTP scheme whatever your nationality. Lodge the claim as early as possible, ideally within 28 days, and give the insurer an email address you'll still use once you've left.
