Whether the crash in St Georges Basin was a small bump or something serious, the early steps are much the same: get checked, report it, swap details and claim within 28 days if you can. What differs is the help you need next, and a free claim check sorts that out. For many people it's doctors and allied health. For some it's an independent CTP lawyer. You don't pay for the check either way.

After a crash in St Georges Basin: the local picture
St Georges Basin is a village on the shore of the large coastal lake of the same name, in the Bay and Basin area south of Nowra. The Wool Road links it with Vincentia and the Princes Highway. Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital is about 30 minutes away.
The Sydney CBD is roughly 147 km from St Georges Basin, but there's no reason to make that trip for help with a claim. Everything starts by phone and online.
If the crash happened in a car park or outside a shopping centre in St Georges Basin, record the exact spot and ask about footage early. Off-road locations like these are often still covered, but check.
South Coast & Shoalhaven: the wider area
Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital in Nowra and Milton-Ulladulla Hospital serve the Shoalhaven, and South East Regional Hospital in Bega serves the far south. People with serious injuries may be transferred to Wollongong, Canberra or Sydney, so treatment can be a long way from home. HMAS Albatross near Nowra and the naval college at Jervis Bay are major employers.

Where to go next with your claim
The pages below are grouped three ways: the car accident and CTP claim itself, working with a solicitor, and broader compensation questions. Each answers one question for people in St Georges Basin. If none quite fits, the free claim check sorts it out with you.
Car accident & CTP
Start here if your question is about the claim rather than the lawyer. These pages cover deadlines, fault, compensation and disputes, whatever you were travelling in.
- CTP lawyerRefused, cut off or offered a settlement? That's usually when legal advice matters.
- CTP claimsThe 28-day and 3-month deadlines, and what to gather before you lodge.
- Car accident lawyerBlamed, partly blamed or unsure? How fault is decided and when a lawyer helps.
- Car accident claimJust had a crash? Sort out whether it's an injury claim, a damage claim or both.
- Car accident compensationLost earnings, pain and suffering, and when each can be paid. No calculator figures.
- CTP claim deniedStopped payments or a threshold label you disagree with? Your review options.
- Motor vehicle accident lawyerRiding, walking, cycling or in a truck, bus or rideshare? Whether it's a CTP claim.
Solicitors
What working with a solicitor involves once you decide to get one, from the papers you bring to the first meeting through to weighing up an offer.
- Compensation solicitorA first meeting by phone or video, the paperwork to expect, and dealing with the insurer.
- Personal injury solicitorChecking a solicitor, giving instructions, and the decisions that stay yours.
- Car accident solicitorThe stages of a CTP damages file, the timing rules, and what you do at each step.
General compensation
Searched for a compensation or personal injury lawyer? These pages start from a motor accident and cover serious injuries and how no win, no fee generally works.
- Compensation lawyerNot sure what you can claim, or who handles it? Start with the kind of claim you have.
- Personal injury lawyerHurt in a crash? What to record from day one, and how to choose a lawyer if you need one.
- Injury compensation lawyerSerious injury after a crash? The threshold line, impairment, and what they change.
- No win no fee lawyerCTP legal costs are regulated. Here's how that fits with no win, no fee arrangements.
After the crash: seven practical steps
- Your safety comes first. Get clear of moving traffic if you can do so safely, and call 000 for police and an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
- A police report gives your claim an independent record of when and where the crash happened. Ask for the event number and file it with your other claim papers.
- See a GP or go to hospital as soon as you can, and say the injuries came from a motor accident so it's written down as the cause.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, phone number, address, licence number and registration. Photograph the vehicles, the scene and any visible injuries.
- Claim as soon as you can. Within 28 days, weekly payments can be back-paid. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start later.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- If anything is unclear or in dispute, ask for a free claim check by phone or online. There's no obligation, and many people find they can manage the claim themselves.
Time limits to know
The clock starts on the day of the crash. Lodge within 28 days if you can, so weekly payments can be back-paid. A claim made up to 3 months later is still possible, though payments may only begin on the date you claim. Damages claims generally have a 3-year limit; lodge by the 2-year mark if you want weekly payments to be able to run past it. As always, it's general information, not legal advice, so check your own dates. More on CTP claim time limits.
Doctors and allied health
Not everyone needs a lawyer after a crash, but most people need good treatment. We can connect you with doctors experienced with CTP claims for the Certificate of Fitness, and with allied health for rehabilitation. The insurer generally pays for reasonable and necessary treatment within your benefit period, and we'll tell you if a provider we refer you to is connected with us.

Frequently asked questions
No. The claim check is free and there's no obligation to take any next step. CTP Lawyer is a free NSW service, not a law firm. We look at where your claim is up to and explain the options in plain English. If you're connected with an independent CTP lawyer, any legal costs are between you and them, and should be set out in writing first.
The sooner the better. The insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days for weekly payments to be back-paid to the day after the accident. Claims made later, up to 3 months after the accident, are still possible, but payments may then start from the claim date. Common law damages claims generally have to be made within 3 years. Your own dates may differ, so check them early.
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
Often not. Many CTP claims for statutory benefits run without a lawyer. Legal help tends to matter when a claim is refused, the insurer says your injury is threshold and you disagree, payments stop, fault is disputed, an offer arrives or a damages claim may be open. SIRA's free CTP Legal Advisory Service can also help with some statutory benefits questions.
Get medical care and tell your doctor the crash caused your injuries. Tell police and keep the event number handy. Swap details with the other driver, photograph everything and note any witnesses. Start a folder for receipts and certificates. Then lodge your CTP claim, aiming for 28 days. If anything feels uncertain, a free claim check can help you prioritise.
We're sorry for your loss. CTP insurance generally covers reasonable funeral expenses regardless of fault, including transporting the person to near their usual home. The deceased person's legal personal representative, usually a close family member, can apply. Dependants may also be able to claim. CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can connect you with a Principal Liaison Coordinator for support.
Yes. The claim is generally made under the NSW CTP scheme because the crash happened in NSW, and it can be run by phone, email and online from wherever you live. Before you leave, get checked at the nearest hospital or by a GP, ask the police for the event number if they attended, and photograph the scene and vehicles if it is safe to do so. Aim to lodge within 28 days.
