Pacific Highway
Divided highway linking the coastal towns, carrying Sydney–Brisbane freight as well as holiday and local traffic.
Oxley Highway
Runs from Port Macquarie through Wauchope and over the ranges to Walcha, with a steep, winding mountain section.
The Lakes Way
Scenic route from Bulahdelah around Myall and Wallis lakes to Forster and Tuncurry.
Waterfall Way
Climbs from near Coffs Harbour through Bellingen and Dorrigo toward Armidale, with steep, narrow sections.
Macleay Valley Way
The former highway through Kempsey and Frederickton, now carrying mostly local traffic.
Getting to work and around the region
Most people drive, because the towns are far apart and local public transport is limited. Daily commutes are mostly within each town or to a nearby centre, such as Wauchope to Port Macquarie or Woolgoolga to Coffs Harbour, but many trips for work, shopping or specialist medical care involve highway driving.
Motorcycling. The Oxley Highway between Wauchope and Walcha and the Waterfall Way to Dorrigo are well-known riding roads with long, steep, winding sections.
Trucks and heavy vehicles. The Pacific Highway is a main freight route between Sydney and Brisbane, and log and farm trucks use the inland roads.
