Whether the crash in Crescent Head was a small bump or something serious, the early steps are much the same: get checked, report it, swap details and claim within 28 days if you can. What differs is the help you need next, and a free claim check sorts that out. For many people it's doctors and allied health. For some it's an independent CTP lawyer. You don't pay for the check either way.

Crescent Head at a glance, for people after a car accident
Crescent Head is a small surfing village on the coast south-east of Kempsey, reached by Crescent Head Road across the Macleay floodplain. The point break and Killick Beach draw visitors year-round, and the village fills up in summer. Kempsey District Hospital is about 25 minutes' drive.
Landmarks people know, such as Killick Beach, help police and insurers pin down where a crash happened. Mention one when you describe the location, along with the street name and time.
If it would be easier to talk in a language other than English, CTP Assist can set up an interpreter for your claim, wherever you live in or near Crescent Head. Its number is 1300 656 919.
Mid North Coast: the wider area
The coast is a mix of regional towns, beaches, river valleys and farmland, with the Manning, Hastings, Macleay and Nambucca rivers crossing the highway. Inland roads such as the Oxley Highway and Waterfall Way climb steeply to the New England tablelands, and The Lakes Way winds around the lakes behind Forster.

After the crash: seven practical steps
- Check on everyone involved, yourself included. If anyone is injured, call 000 straight away and follow the operator's instructions until help arrives.
- If police attend, note the officer's name and station. If they don't, report the crash yourself promptly and keep the event number safe.
- Ask your doctor for a Certificate of Fitness. It records your injuries and what work you can manage, and the insurer relies on it.
- Get names and numbers from witnesses before they leave. Photos of the vehicles, number plates and road layout are worth taking if you can do it safely.
- Work out which CTP insurer to claim with. It's usually the insurer of the vehicle at fault, and CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help you identify it.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- If anything is unclear or in dispute, ask for a free claim check by phone or online. There's no obligation, and many people find they can manage the claim themselves.
Time limits to know
The clock starts on the day of the crash. Lodge within 28 days if you can, so weekly payments can be back-paid. A claim made up to 3 months later is still possible, though payments may only begin on the date you claim. Damages claims generally have a 3-year limit; lodge by the 2-year mark if you want weekly payments to be able to run past it. As always, it's general information, not legal advice, so check your own dates. More on CTP claim time limits.
Getting the right treating team
A doctor experienced with CTP claims can diagnose your injuries, complete the Certificate of Fitness and set a treatment plan. We can point you to one, and to allied health such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology. The insurer generally pays for treatment that is reasonable and necessary, within the benefit periods that apply to you.

Frequently asked questions
Not from us. The claim check is free whatever you decide. If you choose to work with an independent CTP lawyer, legal costs in CTP claims are regulated, and for some disputes they can't be recovered at all. Many motor accident lawyers offer no win, no fee arrangements. Ask for a written costs disclosure before you agree to anything.
Yes. CTP Assist, run by SIRA, can arrange an interpreter for your claim on 1300 656 919. It can also connect you with the free CTP Legal Advisory Service for statutory benefits questions. If you'd like a family member to help you through the claim check, that can often be arranged as well, with your consent.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
Get medical care and tell your doctor the crash caused your injuries. Tell police and keep the event number handy. Swap details with the other driver, photograph everything and note any witnesses. Start a folder for receipts and certificates. Then lodge your CTP claim, aiming for 28 days. If anything feels uncertain, a free claim check can help you prioritise.
The sooner the better. The insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days for weekly payments to be back-paid to the day after the accident. Claims made later, up to 3 months after the accident, are still possible, but payments may then start from the claim date. Common law damages claims generally have to be made within 3 years. Your own dates may differ, so check them early.
No. The whole process can be started from the coast. Our claim check is by phone and online, the claim can be lodged through the Service NSW online form or directly with the insurer, and a local GP can generally complete the Certificate of Fitness. If your case needs a lawyer, many motor accident lawyers are used to working with regional clients by phone and video.
