Whether the crash in Merimbula was a small bump or something serious, the early steps are much the same: get checked, report it, swap details and claim within 28 days if you can. What differs is the help you need next, and a free claim check sorts that out. For many people it's doctors and allied health. For some it's an independent CTP lawyer. You don't pay for the check either way.

Around Merimbula: roads, hospitals and getting around
Merimbula is a coastal holiday town on the far South Coast, on Merimbula Lake and the Princes Highway between Bega and Eden. Merimbula Airport has regular flights to Sydney, and summer brings heavy holiday traffic. South East Regional Hospital in Bega is about 30 minutes north.
If it would be easier to talk in a language other than English, CTP Assist can set up an interpreter for your claim, wherever you live in or near Merimbula. Its number is 1300 656 919.
If your crash happened near Merimbula Lake, note which entrance, car park or street. Places like this may have cameras, and footage is often kept only for a short time.
South Coast & Shoalhaven: the wider area
Much of the coast is holiday country. Populations swell in summer and school holidays, and the Princes Highway fills with caravans, boats and visitors unfamiliar with long rural stretches, sections with one lane each way, and wildlife on the road at dusk. The Kings Highway over Clyde Mountain brings Canberra traffic down to Batemans Bay.

- No win no fee lawyerCTP legal costs are regulated. Here's how that fits with no win, no fee arrangements.
Your first steps after a crash
- Check on everyone involved, yourself included. If anyone is injured, call 000 straight away and follow the operator's instructions until help arrives.
- If police attend, note the officer's name and station. If they don't, report the crash yourself promptly and keep the event number safe.
- Get medical care, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, such as whiplash, can take a day or two to show, and early records help your claim.
- If the other vehicle drove off, note anything you can about it and tell police promptly. A claim against the Nominal Defendant may still be possible.
- Work out which CTP insurer to claim with. It's usually the insurer of the vehicle at fault, and CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help you identify it.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- If anything is unclear or in dispute, ask for a free claim check by phone or online. There's no obligation, and many people find they can manage the claim themselves.
Key CTP deadlines
To have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident, the insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start from the date you claim. A common law damages claim must generally be made within 3 years, and within 2 years if you want weekly payments to continue beyond 2 years. Treat this as general information, not legal advice. More on CTP claim time limits.
Treatment and the medical side of your claim
Treatment and your claim are closely linked. Your GP completes the Certificate of Fitness, which the insurer relies on, and your treating team's notes become the medical evidence. If you'd like help finding a doctor who knows CTP paperwork, or physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology, ask us. The insurer decides what it funds, and decisions can be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions
We're sorry for your loss. CTP insurance generally covers reasonable funeral expenses regardless of fault, including transporting the person to near their usual home. The deceased person's legal personal representative, usually a close family member, can apply. Dependants may also be able to claim. CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can connect you with a Principal Liaison Coordinator for support.
You tell us what happened, when, and where your claim is up to: whether you've lodged, what the insurer has said and how your treatment is going. We check the time limits that apply and whether anything is in dispute. Then we explain your options and point you to the help that fits, whether that's doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer or simply the next form.
Yes. CTP Assist, run by SIRA, can arrange an interpreter for your claim on 1300 656 919. It can also connect you with the free CTP Legal Advisory Service for statutory benefits questions. If you'd like a family member to help you through the claim check, that can often be arranged as well, with your consent.
The sooner the better. The insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days for weekly payments to be back-paid to the day after the accident. Claims made later, up to 3 months after the accident, are still possible, but payments may then start from the claim date. Common law damages claims generally have to be made within 3 years. Your own dates may differ, so check them early.
No. The claim check is free and there's no obligation to take any next step. CTP Lawyer is a free NSW service, not a law firm. We look at where your claim is up to and explain the options in plain English. If you're connected with an independent CTP lawyer, any legal costs are between you and them, and should be set out in writing first.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
No one. You can start with our claim check by phone or online, lodge through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer, and get the Certificate of Fitness from a local GP. If a lawyer would help, many motor accident lawyers work with people on the coast by phone and video. If you're asked to attend an assessment far away, you can ask whether a closer location or a video option is available.
