Whether the crash in Lithgow was a small bump or something serious, the early steps are much the same: get checked, report it, swap details and claim within 28 days if you can. What differs is the help you need next, and a free claim check sorts that out. For many people it's doctors and allied health. For some it's an independent CTP lawyer. You don't pay for the check either way.

Lithgow at a glance, for people after a car accident
Lithgow sits on the Great Western Highway at the western foot of the Blue Mountains, a coal-mining and manufacturing town. Heavy truck traffic on the Great Western Highway descent is a constant. People hurt in a motor accident in Lithgow can get a free, no-obligation CTP claim check by phone or online, and be connected with an independent, specialist CTP lawyer if that would help.
If you went to Lithgow Hospital after the crash, that visit is part of your claim history. Note the date and keep the documents together with the police event number.
If it would be easier to talk in a language other than English, CTP Assist can set up an interpreter for your claim, wherever you live in or near Lithgow. Its number is 1300 656 919.
Central West, Orana & Far West: the wider area
Bathurst's Mount Panorama circuit is a public road when there is no racing, and people drive it at the posted speed limit. Further west, towns are a long way apart, and roads such as the Barrier Highway to Broken Hill cross open country where livestock, kangaroos and emus are often near the road, particularly at dawn and dusk.

What to do after a car accident in Lithgow
- Your safety comes first. Get clear of moving traffic if you can do so safely, and call 000 for police and an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
- Report the crash to police and write down the event number. The insurer will usually ask for it when you lodge a CTP claim.
- Ask your doctor for a Certificate of Fitness. It records your injuries and what work you can manage, and the insurer relies on it.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, phone number, address, licence number and registration. Photograph the vehicles, the scene and any visible injuries.
- Lodge your claim through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer. Aim for 28 days so weekly payments can be back-paid to the day after the crash.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- If anything is unclear or in dispute, ask for a free claim check by phone or online. There's no obligation, and many people find they can manage the claim themselves.
Time limits to know
To have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident, the insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start from the date you claim. A common law damages claim must generally be made within 3 years, and within 2 years if you want weekly payments to continue beyond 2 years. Treat this as general information, not legal advice. More on CTP claim time limits.
Treatment and the medical side of your claim
Your recovery comes first, and it also drives the claim. A doctor who understands CTP can record your injuries properly on the Certificate of Fitness. Physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology may follow. Treatment that is reasonable and necessary is generally funded by the insurer within the benefit periods, though it decides each request.

Frequently asked questions
Get medical care and tell your doctor the crash caused your injuries. Tell police and keep the event number handy. Swap details with the other driver, photograph everything and note any witnesses. Start a folder for receipts and certificates. Then lodge your CTP claim, aiming for 28 days. If anything feels uncertain, a free claim check can help you prioritise.
In many cases, yes. If you're in hospital or finding it hard to manage, a partner, parent or adult child can start the conversation for you. We may need your consent before discussing your details, and the insurer will have its own rules about who it can speak to. For a child's claim, a parent or guardian usually acts for them.
Three main kinds. Doctors experienced with CTP claims, for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness. Allied health, such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology, for treatment and recovery. And an independent lawyer experienced in CTP claims when the case calls for one, for example a refused claim, a threshold dispute or a damages claim. Many people only need the first two.
Not from us. The claim check is free whatever you decide. If you choose to work with an independent CTP lawyer, legal costs in CTP claims are regulated, and for some disputes they can't be recovered at all. Many motor accident lawyers offer no win, no fee arrangements. Ask for a written costs disclosure before you agree to anything.
We're sorry for your loss. CTP insurance generally covers reasonable funeral expenses regardless of fault, including transporting the person to near their usual home. The deceased person's legal personal representative, usually a close family member, can apply. Dependants may also be able to claim. CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can connect you with a Principal Liaison Coordinator for support.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
Usually not. Most injured people can claim statutory benefits whoever was at fault. The main exception is being wholly or mostly at fault, which means contributory negligence above 61%. Then weekly payments and treatment are generally limited to the first 52 weeks, and damages aren't available. Children who were 16 or under at the time can receive treatment and care for as long as they need it, regardless of fault.
No. Nothing about the claim requires a trip over the mountains. Our claim check is by phone and online, the claim can be lodged through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer, and your local GP can generally provide the Certificate of Fitness. If your case needs a lawyer, many motor accident lawyers work with people in the Central West and beyond by phone and video.
