Around Cronulla: roads, hospitals and getting around
Cronulla is the Sutherland Shire's coastal hub, connected to the rest of Sydney primarily via the Princes Highway, Taren Point Road, and Captain Cook Drive. The long commute distances to CBD and airport employment zones mean many Cronulla residents spend significant time on high-speed roads and motorway on-ramps. Injured in a crash near Cronulla? A free claim check by phone or online can help you understand where your claim stands and whether an independent CTP lawyer is worth speaking to.
Landmarks people know, such as Cronulla Beach, the Cronulla Street mall and North Cronulla Beach, help police and insurers pin down where a crash happened. Mention one when you describe the location, along with the street name and time.
If it would be easier to talk in a language other than English, CTP Assist can set up an interpreter for your claim, wherever you live in or near Cronulla. Its number is 1300 656 919.
Sutherland Shire: the wider area
Cronulla's beaches, the Kurnell peninsula and the Royal National Park bring visitors from across Sydney, especially in summer and on weekends. The national park roads, including Sir Bertram Stevens Drive and Lady Wakehurst Drive, are winding and popular with riders and cyclists, while the Cronulla–Bundeena ferry links the two sides of Port Hacking.

What to do after a car accident in Cronulla
- Check on everyone involved, yourself included. If anyone is injured, call 000 straight away and follow the operator's instructions until help arrives.
- Report the crash to police and write down the event number. The insurer will usually ask for it when you lodge a CTP claim.
- Get medical care, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, such as whiplash, can take a day or two to show, and early records help your claim.
- Get names and numbers from witnesses before they leave. Photos of the vehicles, number plates and road layout are worth taking if you can do it safely.
- Work out which CTP insurer to claim with. It's usually the insurer of the vehicle at fault, and CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help you identify it.
- Keep a folder for everything: certificates, receipts, letters from the insurer, time off work and travel to treatment. Good records make every later step easier.
- If anything is unclear or in dispute, ask for a free claim check by phone or online. There's no obligation, and many people find they can manage the claim themselves.
Time limits to know
Claim statutory benefits as early as possible: within 28 days for back-paid weekly payments, and generally within 3 months of the accident. Beyond 3 months, late claims are accepted only in limited circumstances. A damages claim is generally due within 3 years, and one lodged within 2 years can keep weekly payments going past the 2-year mark while it's pending. This summary is general information, not legal advice. More on CTP claim time limits.
Doctors and allied health
Your recovery comes first, and it also drives the claim. A doctor who understands CTP can record your injuries properly on the Certificate of Fitness. Physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology may follow. Treatment that is reasonable and necessary is generally funded by the insurer within the benefit periods, though it decides each request.

Frequently asked questions
Three main kinds. Doctors experienced with CTP claims, for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness. Allied health, such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology, for treatment and recovery. And an independent lawyer experienced in CTP claims when the case calls for one, for example a refused claim, a threshold dispute or a damages claim. Many people only need the first two.
You tell us what happened, when, and where your claim is up to: whether you've lodged, what the insurer has said and how your treatment is going. We check the time limits that apply and whether anything is in dispute. Then we explain your options and point you to the help that fits, whether that's doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer or simply the next form.
No, and you don't need one. The claim check happens by phone and online, so people in Cronulla get the same help as anyone else in NSW without travelling. If an independent CTP lawyer would help with your claim, the lawyer you speak with can generally work with you by phone, email and video as well.
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
Yes. Treatment and the medical evidence it creates are central to most claims. We can point you to doctors experienced with CTP claims for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness, and to physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology. The insurer generally pays for treatment that is reasonable and necessary within the benefit periods, and it decides each request.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
No. The claim check is free and there's no obligation to take any next step. CTP Lawyer is a free NSW service, not a law firm. We look at where your claim is up to and explain the options in plain English. If you're connected with an independent CTP lawyer, any legal costs are between you and them, and should be set out in writing first.
Generally, yes. Roads through the Royal National Park are public roads, and a crash involving a motor vehicle there is handled under the same NSW CTP scheme as anywhere else in the state. If no other vehicle was involved, whether you can claim depends on what you were riding or driving, so tell us exactly what happened. Note the nearest picnic area, beach turn-off or landmark so the location is clear.
