Whether the crash in Bulli was a small bump or something serious, the early steps are much the same: get checked, report it, swap details and claim within 28 days if you can. What differs is the help you need next, and a free claim check sorts that out. For many people it's doctors and allied health. For some it's an independent CTP lawyer. You don't pay for the check either way.

Bulli at a glance, for people after a car accident
Bulli sits on the Princes Highway where it meets Bulli Pass descending from the escarpment, which has a truck runaway lane for the descent. For Bulli residents, a CTP claim generally starts with statutory benefits for weekly payments and treatment costs; some people may later be able to claim common law damages as well.
If you went to Wollongong Hospital after the crash, that visit is part of your claim history. Note the date and keep the documents together with the police event number.
Your nearest major centre, Wollongong, is about 10 km away. You don't need to go there or anywhere else, because the claim check for Bulli is done by phone and online.
Wollongong & the Illawarra: the wider area
Getting in and out of the Illawarra means climbing the escarpment. Mount Ousley Road and the M1 carry most traffic to Sydney, Picton Road links to the Hume Motorway, and Macquarie Pass on the Illawarra Highway climbs to the Southern Highlands. Trucks to and from Port Kembla share these roads with commuters, while the Princes Highway and Memorial Drive carry local traffic along the coast.

After the crash: seven practical steps
- Your safety comes first. Get clear of moving traffic if you can do so safely, and call 000 for police and an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
- If police attend, note the officer's name and station. If they don't, report the crash yourself promptly and keep the event number safe.
- See a GP or go to hospital as soon as you can, and say the injuries came from a motor accident so it's written down as the cause.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, phone number, address, licence number and registration. Photograph the vehicles, the scene and any visible injuries.
- Work out which CTP insurer to claim with. It's usually the insurer of the vehicle at fault, and CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help you identify it.
- Keep copies of every form you send and every letter you receive. Note the dates, because review deadlines, often 28 days, run from when you get a decision.
- Not sure whether you need a lawyer? A free claim check helps you decide. Many claims don't need one, and we'll say so if yours doesn't.
Time limits to know
The clock starts on the day of the crash. Lodge within 28 days if you can, so weekly payments can be back-paid. A claim made up to 3 months later is still possible, though payments may only begin on the date you claim. Damages claims generally have a 3-year limit; lodge by the 2-year mark if you want weekly payments to be able to run past it. As always, it's general information, not legal advice, so check your own dates. More on CTP claim time limits.
Treatment and the medical side of your claim
Not everyone needs a lawyer after a crash, but most people need good treatment. We can connect you with doctors experienced with CTP claims for the Certificate of Fitness, and with allied health for rehabilitation. The insurer generally pays for reasonable and necessary treatment within your benefit period, and we'll tell you if a provider we refer you to is connected with us.

Frequently asked questions
Three main kinds. Doctors experienced with CTP claims, for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness. Allied health, such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology, for treatment and recovery. And an independent lawyer experienced in CTP claims when the case calls for one, for example a refused claim, a threshold dispute or a damages claim. Many people only need the first two.
Yes. CTP Assist, run by SIRA, can arrange an interpreter for your claim on 1300 656 919. It can also connect you with the free CTP Legal Advisory Service for statutory benefits questions. If you'd like a family member to help you through the claim check, that can often be arranged as well, with your consent.
The sooner the better. The insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days for weekly payments to be back-paid to the day after the accident. Claims made later, up to 3 months after the accident, are still possible, but payments may then start from the claim date. Common law damages claims generally have to be made within 3 years. Your own dates may differ, so check them early.
In many cases, yes. If you're in hospital or finding it hard to manage, a partner, parent or adult child can start the conversation for you. We may need your consent before discussing your details, and the insurer will have its own rules about who it can speak to. For a child's claim, a parent or guardian usually acts for them.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
Not from us. The claim check is free whatever you decide. If you choose to work with an independent CTP lawyer, legal costs in CTP claims are regulated, and for some disputes they can't be recovered at all. Many motor accident lawyers offer no win, no fee arrangements. Ask for a written costs disclosure before you agree to anything.
Get medical care and tell your doctor the crash caused your injuries. Tell police and keep the event number handy. Swap details with the other driver, photograph everything and note any witnesses. Start a folder for receipts and certificates. Then lodge your CTP claim, aiming for 28 days. If anything feels uncertain, a free claim check can help you prioritise.
No. You can start with our claim check by phone or online from anywhere in the Illawarra, and the claim itself is lodged through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer. A local GP can generally provide the Certificate of Fitness. If your case needs a lawyer, many work by phone and video, and some are based in Wollongong, so you can usually avoid the drive up Mount Ousley.
