After a crash in Yarra: the local picture
Yarra is a Southern Tablelands rural locality near Parkesbourne, Komungla and Tirrannaville, set in grazing country on the fringe of Goulburn with the Hume corridor nearby. Wherever in Yarra the crash happened, the same NSW CTP rules apply: most injured people can claim statutory benefits regardless of fault, and claiming within 28 days generally lets weekly payments be back-paid to the day after the accident.
Being 13 km from Goulburn doesn't put you further from help. The claim check runs by phone and online, so you start the same way as people in the city.
If the crash happened in a car park or outside a shopping centre in Yarra, record the exact spot and ask about footage early. Off-road locations like these are often still covered, but check.
Goulburn & Southern Tablelands: the wider area
Winters are cold, with frost, fog and occasional snow, and kangaroos and wombats are common on rural roads at night. Goulburn Base Hospital is the main local hospital. Seriously injured people may be taken to Canberra Hospital in the ACT, and some residents also travel to Canberra for work and specialist care.

Most people start with the first group, because it deals with the claim: lodging it, fault, what it pays and what to do after a refusal. The other two groups suit people who are already weighing up legal help.

Your first steps after a crash
- Make the scene safe if you can. Switch on your warning lights, move out of traffic if it's safe to do so, and call 000 if anyone is hurt or trapped.
- If police attend, note the officer's name and station. If they don't, report the crash yourself promptly and keep the event number safe.
- Get medical care, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, such as whiplash, can take a day or two to show, and early records help your claim.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, phone number, address, licence number and registration. Photograph the vehicles, the scene and any visible injuries.
- Lodge your claim through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer. Aim for 28 days so weekly payments can be back-paid to the day after the crash.
- Keep copies of every form you send and every letter you receive. Note the dates, because review deadlines, often 28 days, run from when you get a decision.
- Ask for a free claim check, and we'll look at where your claim is up to and point you to doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer, or both.
Key CTP deadlines
The clock starts on the day of the crash. Lodge within 28 days if you can, so weekly payments can be back-paid. A claim made up to 3 months later is still possible, though payments may only begin on the date you claim. Damages claims generally have a 3-year limit; lodge by the 2-year mark if you want weekly payments to be able to run past it. As always, it's general information, not legal advice, so check your own dates. More on CTP claim time limits.
Treatment and the medical side of your claim
A doctor experienced with CTP claims can diagnose your injuries, complete the Certificate of Fitness and set a treatment plan. We can point you to one, and to allied health such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology. The insurer generally pays for treatment that is reasonable and necessary, within the benefit periods that apply to you.

Frequently asked questions
In many cases, yes. If you're in hospital or finding it hard to manage, a partner, parent or adult child can start the conversation for you. We may need your consent before discussing your details, and the insurer will have its own rules about who it can speak to. For a child's claim, a parent or guardian usually acts for them.
Three main kinds. Doctors experienced with CTP claims, for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness. Allied health, such as physiotherapy, psychology and exercise physiology, for treatment and recovery. And an independent lawyer experienced in CTP claims when the case calls for one, for example a refused claim, a threshold dispute or a damages claim. Many people only need the first two.
No, and you don't need one. The claim check happens by phone and online, so people in Yarra get the same help as anyone else in NSW without travelling. If an independent CTP lawyer would help with your claim, the lawyer you speak with can generally work with you by phone, email and video as well.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
Yes. Treatment and the medical evidence it creates are central to most claims. We can point you to doctors experienced with CTP claims for diagnosis and the Certificate of Fitness, and to physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology. The insurer generally pays for treatment that is reasonable and necessary within the benefit periods, and it decides each request.
We're sorry for your loss. CTP insurance generally covers reasonable funeral expenses regardless of fault, including transporting the person to near their usual home. The deceased person's legal personal representative, usually a close family member, can apply. Dependants may also be able to claim. CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can connect you with a Principal Liaison Coordinator for support.
Get medical care and tell your doctor the crash caused your injuries. Tell police and keep the event number handy. Swap details with the other driver, photograph everything and note any witnesses. Start a folder for receipts and certificates. Then lodge your CTP claim, aiming for 28 days. If anything feels uncertain, a free claim check can help you prioritise.
Generally not. The ACT has its own motor accident injuries scheme, and a crash in the ACT is usually handled under it, even if you and your car are from NSW. The rules and time limits differ, so don't delay. Tell us where the crash happened. If it was on the NSW side of the border, such as on the Federal Highway before you reach the ACT, the NSW scheme applies and our claim check can help.
