Whether the crash in Tenterfield was a small bump or something serious, the early steps are much the same: get checked, report it, swap details and claim within 28 days if you can. What differs is the help you need next, and a free claim check sorts that out. For many people it's doctors and allied health. For some it's an independent CTP lawyer. You don't pay for the check either way.

Around Tenterfield: roads, hospitals and getting around
Tenterfield sits on the New England Highway near the Queensland border, with sheep grazing, tourism, and transport defining the local economy. Long-distance trucks moving between Sydney and Brisbane dominate the highway traffic. For Tenterfield residents, a CTP claim generally starts with statutory benefits for weekly payments and treatment costs; some people may later be able to claim common law damages as well.
The Sydney CBD is roughly 541 km from Tenterfield, but there's no reason to make that trip for help with a claim. Everything starts by phone and online.
If it would be easier to talk in a language other than English, CTP Assist can set up an interpreter for your claim, wherever you live in or near Tenterfield. Its number is 1300 656 919.
New England & North West: the wider area
Winters on the tablelands bring frost, fog and occasional snow, especially around Armidale, Guyra and Glen Innes, while summer on the plains means heat and long, straight roads where concentration can drift. Tamworth Hospital and Armidale Hospital are the main hospitals, supported by the hospitals in Inverell, Moree, Gunnedah and Narrabri.

Your first steps after a crash
- Make the scene safe if you can. Switch on your warning lights, move out of traffic if it's safe to do so, and call 000 if anyone is hurt or trapped.
- A police report gives your claim an independent record of when and where the crash happened. Ask for the event number and file it with your other claim papers.
- See a GP or go to hospital as soon as you can, and say the injuries came from a motor accident so it's written down as the cause.
- Get names and numbers from witnesses before they leave. Photos of the vehicles, number plates and road layout are worth taking if you can do it safely.
- Work out which CTP insurer to claim with. It's usually the insurer of the vehicle at fault, and CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help you identify it.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- Not sure whether you need a lawyer? A free claim check helps you decide. Many claims don't need one, and we'll say so if yours doesn't.
Time limits to know
The clock starts on the day of the crash. Lodge within 28 days if you can, so weekly payments can be back-paid. A claim made up to 3 months later is still possible, though payments may only begin on the date you claim. Damages claims generally have a 3-year limit; lodge by the 2-year mark if you want weekly payments to be able to run past it. As always, it's general information, not legal advice, so check your own dates. More on CTP claim time limits.
Treatment and the medical side of your claim
Treatment and your claim are closely linked. Your GP completes the Certificate of Fitness, which the insurer relies on, and your treating team's notes become the medical evidence. If you'd like help finding a doctor who knows CTP paperwork, or physiotherapy, psychology or exercise physiology, ask us. The insurer decides what it funds, and decisions can be reviewed.

Frequently asked questions
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
No. The claim check is free and there's no obligation to take any next step. CTP Lawyer is a free NSW service, not a law firm. We look at where your claim is up to and explain the options in plain English. If you're connected with an independent CTP lawyer, any legal costs are between you and them, and should be set out in writing first.
The sooner the better. The insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days for weekly payments to be back-paid to the day after the accident. Claims made later, up to 3 months after the accident, are still possible, but payments may then start from the claim date. Common law damages claims generally have to be made within 3 years. Your own dates may differ, so check them early.
You tell us what happened, when, and where your claim is up to: whether you've lodged, what the insurer has said and how your treatment is going. We check the time limits that apply and whether anything is in dispute. Then we explain your options and point you to the help that fits, whether that's doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer or simply the next form.
Not from us. The claim check is free whatever you decide. If you choose to work with an independent CTP lawyer, legal costs in CTP claims are regulated, and for some disputes they can't be recovered at all. Many motor accident lawyers offer no win, no fee arrangements. Ask for a written costs disclosure before you agree to anything.
Yes. CTP Assist, run by SIRA, can arrange an interpreter for your claim on 1300 656 919. It can also connect you with the free CTP Legal Advisory Service for statutory benefits questions. If you'd like a family member to help you through the claim check, that can often be arranged as well, with your consent.
No. Distance from the coast makes no difference to how a NSW CTP claim works. You can start with our claim check by phone or online, lodge the claim through the Service NSW online form or with the insurer, and get treatment and the Certificate of Fitness from a local GP. If a lawyer would help, many motor accident lawyers work with people in the North West by phone and video.
