Gurrundah: your CTP claim, step by step

Most people can lodge a CTP claim themselves. We'll check yours for free and flag anything that needs more help.

You don't need a lawyer to lodge a CTP claim, and many people never use one. What helps most is having the police event number, a Certificate of Fitness from your doctor, your earnings details and the insurer's name. If you're in Gurrundah and unsure where to start, our free claim check walks you through it and flags anything that may need more than a form.

Your first months: the CTP claim timeline

From the day of the crash to the two-year mark, this is how a typical claim for statutory benefits is timed. Your own claim may differ, especially if the insurer disputes something.

  1. Day 0

    The accident

Get medical help first. Then report the crash to police and note the event number, which the claim form asks for. The other vehicle's registration helps identify the right insurer later.

  2. Within 28 days

    Lodge your claim

The 28-day mark is the one to aim for: claims received by then generally have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident. Lodging sooner also means the evidence is fresh.

  3. Within 14 days of your explanation

    A late claim, explained

For accidents from 1 April 2023, a claim made after 28 days but within 3 months may still be back-paid if you give a full and satisfactory explanation. If the insurer doesn't reject it within 14 days, it's treated as accepted.

  4. Within 3 months

    The last point to claim

Claims can still be made up to 3 months after the accident, though weekly payments may then only start from the date of the claim. After 3 months, claims are accepted only in limited circumstances.

  5. Weeks 1–13, then 14+

    Weekly payment rates

For the first 13 weeks, payments are up to 95% of what you earned before the accident. After week 13 the rate becomes up to 80% or 85%; your earning capacity decides which. A legislated maximum applies.

  6. 52 weeks

    The threshold and at-fault line

For accidents from 1 April 2023, statutory benefits for a threshold injury, or where you were wholly or mostly at fault, generally end 52 weeks after the accident. Children 16 and under keep treatment and care as long as needed.

  7. 104 weeks

    Weekly payments generally end

Two years in, weekly payments generally stop unless you've lodged a damages claim that's still pending. To keep them going past 2 years, that damages claim must be lodged within 2 years of the accident.

General information, not legal advice. Dates depend on your accident date and circumstances. Rules change, so check the current rules.

Getting your claim in

There are two main ways to lodge: the Service NSW online form, or the CTP insurer itself. Either way, you'll be asked for the accident date and place, the vehicles involved, your injuries, your employer and income, and the doctors treating you. Most people can complete it themselves in one go if they have the details to hand.

Not sure which insurer?

If more than one vehicle was involved, or you don't have the other driver's details, CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help identify the right insurer.

Working with the insurer and your case manager

Insurers make decisions under the scheme rules, and your case manager is the person who passes them on. Most contact is routine: updated certificates, treatment approvals, payment questions. Reply promptly, keep copies of what you send, and ask for written reasons for any decision you don't understand. You can challenge decisions if you need to.

  • Log every call with the date and the name of the person
  • Send updated certificates before the old one runs out
  • Note the date on any decision letter

Gurrundah: treatment, paperwork and your claim

A crash on the Federal Highway near the ACT border needs a quick check first, because the ACT has its own scheme. If the crash was in NSW, lodge with the NSW CTP insurer, ideally within 28 days. If Goulburn Base Hospital admitted you, note the dates of your stay and when you were discharged. Days in hospital are days you couldn't work, and the insurer will want them on the claim form alongside your first Certificate of Fitness. Lodging a claim doesn't mean a trip to Goulburn, 36 km away. From Gurrundah, the claim form can be completed online, most insurer contact happens by phone and email, and our free claim check works the same way.

What you'll need to lodge

You don't need a perfect file to lodge. Start with the basics you have, then add documents as they arrive. Insurers generally ask for more information later, and it's better to lodge within 28 days with a gap in the paperwork than to wait for every page and lose back-pay.

  • Date, time and place of the crash
  • Your Certificate of Fitness
  • Hospital discharge summary, if you were admitted
  • Recent payslips, tax returns or business records
  • Your employer's name and contact details

What statutory benefits cover

Weekly payments replace part of your income while the injury keeps you off work or on reduced hours. The insurer sets your rate from what you earned before the accident, so give it the full picture from the start: every job you held and the hours you usually worked. A legislated maximum applies and is indexed each year, so the cap itself changes over time.

Your CTP insurer covers treatment and care for accident injuries where it's reasonable and necessary, within whatever benefit period applies to you. That can include doctor visits, physiotherapy, medication and some travel for treatment. The insurer decides each request, and decisions can be reviewed, so ask before committing to large treatment costs.

Rules change

The scheme has changed more than once since 2017. What applies to you depends on your accident date, so check the current rules before relying on any detail.

The 52-week limit and who it applies to

Some claims are capped at 52 weeks. For accidents on or after 1 April 2023, people whose injury is classed as a threshold injury can receive weekly payments and treatment and care for up to 52 weeks after the accident. The threshold label replaced the older term “minor injury” on that date. Whether an injury is threshold is a medical question in its own right; for running the claim, the point is the time limit it sets.

The Certificate of Fitness

Ask your GP for a Certificate of Fitness at your first visit after the crash, and keep getting updated ones while you're off work or on reduced hours. Gaps between certificates can cause gaps in payments. If your doctor isn't familiar with CTP forms, a practitioner who knows the scheme can make the process easier.

Signs your claim needs more than a form

Help comes in different forms. For treatment and medical evidence, doctors and allied health practitioners who know the CTP scheme are often the right first call. For disputes and damages, an independent CTP lawyer. For general questions, CTP Assist on 1300 656 919. Our free claim check helps you work out which of these you need.

Do you need a lawyer to make a CTP claim?

Lodging a CTP claim is something most people do without any legal help. A few situations change that. Here's a quick guide to which is which.

Often worth talking to a lawyer

  • The insurer's reasons for a decision don't make sense to you
  • Weekly payments stopped earlier than you expected
  • Your injury has been classed as threshold and your doctor disagrees
  • The insurer has refused to accept the claim

You may not need one

  • Your treatment requests are being approved
  • Your injury is healing well within the first months
  • You just need to know which insurer to claim against

Treatment is often the first gap, not legal help. We can connect you with doctors and allied health experienced with CTP claims, from the Certificate of Fitness to physiotherapy and psychology.
