After the crash: seven practical steps
- Your safety comes first. Get clear of moving traffic if you can do so safely, and call 000 for police and an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
- If police attend, note the officer's name and station. If they don't, report the crash yourself promptly and keep the event number safe.
- Get medical care, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, such as whiplash, can take a day or two to show, and early records help your claim.

To have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident, the insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start from the date you claim.
