Local roads, car parks and hospitals near Ultimo

City crashes are often low-speed bumps between taxis, vans and cars on streets like Oxford Street or Broadway. If someone was hurt, it's an injury claim as well as a damage claim, so report it and keep the event number. Near the University of Technology Sydney or anywhere else, a crash in a car park or private driveway can still lead to an injury claim through CTP. Where exactly it happened matters, so write it down while you remember. Hospitals serving the area include Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. If pain started after you got home, see a GP and mention the crash. That first record is the starting point of any injury claim.

What kind of claim does a crash near Ultimo give you?

People often ring about the car first because the damage is visible and the tow truck is waiting. The injury side can seem less urgent, especially if the pain comes later. Yet the injury claim has its own deadlines, running from the date of the crash. Treat the two as separate jobs from day one, even if you only need to act on one of them.

Reporting the crash and swapping details

At the scene, swap names, addresses and registration numbers with every driver involved, and ask for their insurer if they know it. Photograph the other vehicle's plate and the driver's licence if they agree. If the other vehicle is a work, rental or rideshare car, note the company too. These details are what connect your injury claim to the right insurer.

If a driver refuses to swap details, don't argue. Note the plate and a description of the car and the driver, and ask anyone nearby whether they saw it. Report the refusal to police with those details. A vehicle's CTP insurer can usually be found from its registration later, provided someone wrote it down.

Which claim do you have?

An injury, a damaged car and a missing driver are three different problems. The cards below show where each one generally goes. If more than one fits, you may have more than one claim running at once.

  • You were injured

An injury goes to a CTP insurer

Injuries from a crash in NSW are generally claimed through CTP insurance, whoever caused the crash. The claim usually goes to the insurer of the vehicle at fault. Lodging early matters, so start once you've seen a doctor.

    CTP claims in Ultimo
  • Your car was damaged

Car and property damage is a separate claim

CTP covers people, not cars. Repairs usually go through your own comprehensive insurance or a claim against the at-fault driver or their insurer. It isn't something we help with, but it shouldn't delay your injury claim.

What CTP does and doesn't cover
  • Hit-and-run or uninsured

A driver who fled or had no Green Slip

If the vehicle drove off and can't be identified, or had no CTP insurance, you can claim against the Nominal Defendant, a NSW Government-backed fund. Report the crash to police promptly and make due inquiry and search for the vehicle.

    Uninsured or unidentified vehicles
  • Driving for work

Driving for work usually brings another scheme first

A crash while working is usually a work injury as well as a motor accident. Workers compensation generally comes first. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, which is worth checking before you settle anything.

  • Someone died

When someone died in the crash

If someone died, CTP generally covers reasonable funeral expenses regardless of fault. Close relatives who depended on them may also be able to claim. CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can put you in touch with support.

When a car accident claim needs legal help

Whether you need a lawyer depends on the kind of claim you have and how smoothly it's going. A straightforward injury claim against an identified, insured vehicle often doesn't need one. The points below show when advice is commonly worth it.

Often worth talking to a lawyer

  • The crash happened in a car park or driveway and cover is questioned
  • The other vehicle turned out to be unregistered or uninsured
  • The insurer doubts that a small crash caused your injuries
  • A property insurer wants a signed release that may mention injuries

You may not need one

  • The insurer has accepted your injury claim and treatment is approved
  • Treatment and a clear medical record are what you need most right now
  • The other vehicle is identified and insured, and your claim is lodged

Whatever kind of claim you have, the injury side rests on medical records. We can point you to doctors and allied health who work with CTP claims and can complete the Certificate of Fitness the insurer asks for.

When a low-speed bump turns into an injury claim

A crash doesn't need to be dramatic to cause an injury. Low-speed bumps, especially from behind, can strain the neck and back, and some people also feel anxious about driving afterwards. If you're hurt, it's an injury claim, however small the damage to the cars. What matters is that a doctor records your symptoms and links them to the crash.

Deadlines run from the crash

Time limits for an injury claim count from the date of the accident, not the day the pain started. If you're unsure, check early rather than late.

Repairs, write-offs and hire cars

If only property was damaged and nobody was hurt, there is no CTP claim, and the matter is between the drivers and their property insurers. We don't handle those claims. If someone was hurt as well, keep the two apart in your paperwork and your head. The repair claim can take weeks; the injury claim has deadlines that keep running regardless.

Keep the damage records even though CTP doesn't pay for them. Photos of the vehicles, repair quotes and assessor reports can show how hard the impact was and from which direction. They sometimes help the injury claim, for example when an insurer questions whether a low-speed crash could have caused your injuries.

No insurer to claim from? What happens then

A vehicle that can't be identified, or one with no CTP insurance, doesn't leave you without someone to claim against. The Nominal Defendant, a NSW Government-backed fund, stands in for the missing insurer. The injury claim then works in much the same way as any other, and the usual time limits apply from the date of the crash.

The first days after a crash: what to gather

The first days set up whichever claim you end up making. Take photos of both cars, the road and any injuries you can see. Write down what happened in your own words while it's fresh. Keep the other driver's details, the police event number if you have one, and every receipt. Then see a doctor and tell them it was a car accident, so the link is recorded from the start.

  • The other driver's name, address, licence and registration
  • Any police event number you were given
  • Names and phone numbers of any witnesses
  • Any claim or reference numbers from insurers
