Most people hurt on NSW roads can claim statutory benefits for treatment and lost income, whoever was at fault. For people in Balgowlah, the process starts the same way as anywhere else in the state. What changes from claim to claim is the help needed. Some people need a doctor experienced with CTP claims and physiotherapy. Some need an independent CTP lawyer. Plenty need only the first. A free claim check helps you work out which.

Balgowlah at a glance, for people after a car accident
Balgowlah is a Northern Beaches suburb near Fairlight, Clontarf and Manly Vale, sitting on the busy corridor that carries commuters toward the Spit Bridge and the city. Wherever in Balgowlah the crash happened, the same NSW CTP rules apply: most injured people can claim statutory benefits regardless of fault, and claiming within 28 days generally lets weekly payments be back-paid to the day after the accident.
The NSW CTP scheme works the same way in Balgowlah as in every other part of the state. Your council area doesn't change the time limits or where you lodge a claim.
Getting around after a crash can be harder than usual. If you'll be relying on the Manly ferry wharf to reach work or treatment for a while, keep a note of the extra time and cost from the start.
Northern Beaches: the wider area
The beaches attract visitors from across Sydney, and summer weekends bring heavy traffic, parking pressure and many pedestrians around Manly, Dee Why, Narrabeen and Palm Beach. Northern Beaches Hospital at Frenchs Forest is the area's main hospital, with Mona Vale Hospital in the north, and Royal North Shore Hospital at St Leonards often receives more seriously injured people.

Your first steps after a crash
- Check on everyone involved, yourself included. If anyone is injured, call 000 straight away and follow the operator's instructions until help arrives.
- If police attend, note the officer's name and station. If they don't, report the crash yourself promptly and keep the event number safe.
- Get medical care, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, such as whiplash, can take a day or two to show, and early records help your claim.
- Swap details with the other driver: name, phone number, address, licence number and registration. Photograph the vehicles, the scene and any visible injuries.
- Work out which CTP insurer to claim with. It's usually the insurer of the vehicle at fault, and CTP Assist on 1300 656 919 can help you identify it.
- Write down how the injuries affect your days, your sleep and your work. A simple diary, kept from the start, helps if the insurer questions how you're affected.
- Ask for a free claim check, and we'll look at where your claim is up to and point you to doctors and allied health, an independent CTP lawyer, or both.
Key CTP deadlines
To have weekly payments back-paid to the day after the accident, the insurer generally needs your claim within 28 days. You can still claim up to 3 months after the accident, but payments may start from the date you claim. A common law damages claim must generally be made within 3 years, and within 2 years if you want weekly payments to continue beyond 2 years. Treat this as general information, not legal advice. More on CTP claim time limits.
Treatment and the medical side of your claim
Not everyone needs a lawyer after a crash, but most people need good treatment. We can connect you with doctors experienced with CTP claims for the Certificate of Fitness, and with allied health for rehabilitation. The insurer generally pays for reasonable and necessary treatment within your benefit period, and we'll tell you if a provider we refer you to is connected with us.

Frequently asked questions
Usually not. Most injured people can claim statutory benefits whoever was at fault. The main exception is being wholly or mostly at fault, which means contributory negligence above 61%. Then weekly payments and treatment are generally limited to the first 52 weeks, and damages aren't available. Children who were 16 or under at the time can receive treatment and care for as long as they need it, regardless of fault.
Get medical care and tell your doctor the crash caused your injuries. Tell police and keep the event number handy. Swap details with the other driver, photograph everything and note any witnesses. Start a folder for receipts and certificates. Then lodge your CTP claim, aiming for 28 days. If anything feels uncertain, a free claim check can help you prioritise.
Generally, the NSW CTP scheme applies where the crash happened in NSW. If it happened in another state or territory, that place's own scheme usually applies instead, though the details can be complicated, so say where it happened. The date matters too. Accidents from 1 December 2017 fall under the Motor Accident Injuries Act 2017, and earlier ones under the 1999 Act.
Often not. Many CTP claims for statutory benefits run without a lawyer. Legal help tends to matter when a claim is refused, the insurer says your injury is threshold and you disagree, payments stop, fault is disputed, an offer arrives or a damages claim may be open. SIRA's free CTP Legal Advisory Service can also help with some statutory benefits questions.
Most insurer decisions can be reviewed. You can generally ask for an internal review within 28 days of receiving the decision, and the insurer usually has 14 days to respond, or longer for some matters. If you still disagree, you can apply to the Personal Injury Commission. A refused claim is one of the situations where an independent CTP lawyer is often worth talking to.
Not at first, in most cases. If the crash is also a work injury, you generally need to claim workers compensation through your employer's insurer first. That is a different scheme from CTP, and CTP statutory benefits are generally not payable where workers compensation is available. You may still be able to claim damages from the at-fault driver's CTP insurer, so get advice. Commuting crashes depend on the facts. Tell us about the trip and we can point you to the right help.
Not from us. The claim check is free whatever you decide. If you choose to work with an independent CTP lawyer, legal costs in CTP claims are regulated, and for some disputes they can't be recovered at all. Many motor accident lawyers offer no win, no fee arrangements. Ask for a written costs disclosure before you agree to anything.
Get medical care and keep every report and receipt. Ask the police for the event number if they attended, and note the driver's name and registration if you have them. The NSW CTP scheme generally applies to crashes in NSW regardless of where you live, so lodge a claim as soon as you can, ideally within 28 days, and give the insurer an email address and overseas phone number to reach you.
